Jaisalmer is one of the most remote cities in India — and that's part of its magic. But getting here is easier than you might think. Here are your options, with honest pros and cons.
By train (most popular)
Jaisalmer Railway Station (JSM) is well connected, and the overnight train is many travellers' favourite way to arrive.
- From Delhi: direct overnight trains run from Delhi to Jaisalmer.
- From Jaipur: direct trains are available, many travelling via Jodhpur.
- From Jodhpur: frequent trains take around 5–6 hours.
Why we like it: you sleep through the journey and wake up in the desert. Book early in peak season (October–March), as sleeper and AC classes fill up quickly.
By air
Jaisalmer Airport (JSA)
Jaisalmer has its own airport, a short drive from the city. Flights are limited and often seasonal, so check current schedules for your dates.
Jodhpur Airport (JDH)
If there's no convenient flight to Jaisalmer, fly into Jodhpur, which has regular flights to major Indian cities. From Jodhpur, Jaisalmer is about 285 km — roughly a 5-hour drive or a train journey.
Tip: many travellers combine both cities — fly into Jodhpur, spend a day there, then drive to Jaisalmer.
By road
Jaisalmer is connected by good highways:
| From | Approx. distance | Approx. drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Jodhpur | 285 km | 5 hours |
| Bikaner | 330 km | 5–6 hours |
| Jaipur | 560 km | 9–10 hours |
| Udaipur | 500 km | 8–9 hours |
Government and private buses connect Jaisalmer with major Rajasthan cities. For comfort and flexibility, a private taxi is the best option — you can stop at villages and viewpoints along the way.
Getting around Jaisalmer
The old city and fort are best explored on foot, but most attractions are spread out:
- Sam Sand Dunes: ~40 km
- Kuldhara: ~18 km
- Tanot Mata and Longewala: ~120 km
Public transport to these places is limited, so most visitors hire a car with a driver. Our taxi service offers everything from sedans to 16-seater Tempo Travellers, with pickup from the railway station, bus stand or airport.
Let us handle it
All our Jaisalmer tour packages include pickup and drop from the railway station, bus stand or airport, plus a private taxi for all sightseeing. Just share your arrival details and we'll be waiting for you.
