Sam Sand Dunes: the classic experience
Sam is the most famous desert destination in Rajasthan, and for good reason. The dunes here are big and dramatic, and the road from Jaisalmer is smooth.
Why choose Sam:
- The most impressive, photogenic dunes near Jaisalmer.
- All activities in one place — camel and jeep safari, quad biking, paragliding.
- A huge range of camps with cultural programmes every evening.
- Easy to combine with Kuldhara village on the way.
The downside: in peak season (especially Christmas–New Year), the main sunset area gets crowded. A good operator will take you deeper into the dunes by jeep to find quieter spots.
Khuri: the peaceful alternative
Khuri is a small village surrounded by gentler dunes and traditional mud-and-thatch houses. It feels more remote and more rural.
Why choose Khuri:
- Fewer tourists and a calmer evening.
- A glimpse of traditional desert village life.
- Darker skies for stargazing.
The downside: the dunes are smaller and there are fewer activity options.
Which one is right for you?
- First trip to Jaisalmer? Go with Sam. It's the iconic experience and has everything in one place.
- Travelling with kids or a group? Sam — more activities and livelier evenings.
- Honeymooners or slow travellers? Consider Khuri, or ask us for a quieter camp at Sam.
- Photographers? Both are great; Sam has bigger dunes, Khuri has emptier landscapes.
