Jaisalmer sits deep in the Thar Desert, so the season you choose shapes your entire trip — from how comfortable the fort walk feels at noon to how cold the dunes get after dark. Here's what each part of the year is really like, from a team that lives here all year round.

Quick answer: the best time to visit Jaisalmer is October to March. Days are warm and sunny, nights are cool, and desert safaris and camp stays are at their best.

Peak season: October to March

This is when the Golden City truly shines.

  • Day temperatures: roughly 20–30°C — pleasant for walking around the fort and havelis.
  • Night temperatures: can drop to single digits in December and January, especially on the dunes.
  • What it's great for: everything — sightseeing, camel and jeep safaris, desert camp nights, the border trip to Longewala and Tanot.

December and January are the busiest months, with Christmas and New Year bringing big crowds to the Sam Sand Dunes. Camps and taxis fill up fast, so book at least a few weeks ahead.

Tip: pack a warm jacket, a cap and socks for the camp night. The desert is surprisingly cold after sunset in winter.

The Desert Festival (January/February)

Jaisalmer's famous Desert Festival is held around the full moon of the Hindu month of Magh, usually in late January or February. Expect camel races and decorated camels, turban-tying and moustache competitions, folk music and dance, and a closing evening on the Sam dunes. Dates change every year, so check the official schedule and book early — it's one of the busiest weeks of the season.

Shoulder months: late February to March

As winter fades, the crowds thin and the weather is still very comfortable. This is one of the best-value windows for a Jaisalmer tour package: good camp availability, mild nights and long golden evenings. Holi (usually in March) is celebrated with lots of colour in the old city.

Summer: April to June

Summer in the Thar is intense.

  • Day temperatures: regularly above 40°C, and can go higher in May and June.
  • What still works: early-morning sightseeing, late-evening safaris and air-conditioned stays.
  • Why consider it: fewer tourists and lower prices.

If you visit in summer, plan the fort and havelis before 10 AM, rest through the afternoon, and head to the dunes only after 5 PM. Carry plenty of water and avoid long camel rides in the heat.

Monsoon: July to September

Jaisalmer gets very little rain compared with the rest of India, but the monsoon brings a welcome drop in temperature and occasional dramatic skies over the fort. It is still humid and warm, and some desert camps run reduced operations. By late September, the weather starts to turn pleasant again — a great time for travellers who want the sights without the peak-season crowds.

Month-by-month summary

Month Weather Crowds Good for safari & camp?
Oct–Nov Warm days, cool nights Moderate Excellent
Dec–Jan Cool days, cold nights Very high Excellent (pack warm)
Feb–Mar Pleasant Moderate Excellent
Apr–Jun Very hot Low Evenings only
