About 18 km west of Jaisalmer, on the road to the Sam Sand Dunes, lie the roofless sandstone houses of Kuldhara. Rows of homes, a temple and a step-well stand empty in the desert — and behind them is one of Rajasthan's most famous legends.
The legend of Kuldhara
Kuldhara was once a prosperous village of the Paliwal Brahmins, a community known for its skill in farming and water management in this harsh desert. According to local tradition, the Paliwals lived in a cluster of villages around Kuldhara for centuries.
The best-known story says that in the early 19th century, a powerful minister of the Jaisalmer state set his eyes on the village chief's daughter and threatened the community with crushing taxes and force if she was not handed over. Rather than give in, the Paliwals of Kuldhara and the surrounding villages are said to have left in a single night, leaving their homes and belongings behind.
As they left, legend says, they placed a curse on the land: no one would ever be able to settle there again. To this day, the village remains uninhabited.
What historians say
Historians suggest that other factors — such as falling water supplies, droughts, and heavy taxation — likely played a role in the gradual decline of Kuldhara and the other Paliwal villages. As with many legends, the truth is probably a mix of history and story.
Is Kuldhara really haunted?
Kuldhara is often called "the haunted village of Rajasthan", and it's a popular stop for ghost-story lovers. Officially, the site is managed as a heritage site with daytime visiting hours. Whether you believe in the curse or not, standing among the silent ruins at dusk is a genuinely eerie and moving experience.
What to see
- The main street lined with the remains of houses — you can still make out rooms, courtyards and stairways.
